The Rev. Charles H. Fulmer, S.J., papers, 1849-1863.

The Fulmer papers consist of two notebooks, mostly of poems, each of about 360 pages and bound in boards. Some of the poetry is copied from English and American authors such as Byron and Longfellow and some appear to be copied from contemporary periodicals. Other poems seem to be by Fulmer himself, are signed with his initials, and in some cases dated. A substantial number of poems, although in Fulmer's hand, seem to be by students and fellow Jesuits and were probably copied by Fulmer from the writers' notebooks. Although the subjects of the poetry are diverse, academic, patriotic, and religious themes predominate. The final pages of the second notebook contain prose transcriptions by Fulmer of the 'Debate of the Literary Circle of St. Jos' Coll, Dec. 15th, 1854', 'Public debate of the Literary Circle ... July 6, 1855', and the first, second and third 'address[es] before the Literary Circle ... ' July 7th, 1854-July 7th, 1856. Saint Joseph's College, Philadelphia, Pa., was founded in 1851 and chartered in 1852. The Literary Circle of the college was organized on Nov. 29, 1853.
